Speakers: Canek Peña-Vargas and the Indigenous Language Revitalization Class from the L.A. School of Global Studies
The Nimalaj Be' Mayan Language Club at the L.A. School of Global Studies represents generations of indigenous and Guatemalan Maya students. In 2025, the Indigenous Language Revitalization Class was created with the purpose of sustaining indigenous student culture and community. Teachers and students have created videos, art installations, multilingual poetry books, and newspapers that sustain and revitalize indigenous languages in Central Los Angeles. Presenters will describe the context within which this class was created, its purpose, and goals for the future. The talk will begin with an introduction by the class's founding teacher and a panel with five students, and will include a brief language lesson in Maya K’iche’.
